For as long as I can remember, this has been one of my favourite Kentish events, held in the grounds of Saltwood Castle, an ancient fortress where Thomas Becket's assassination was planned, and successive earthquakes have created the most romantic of ruins. The calls of peacocks echo around the ramparts, adding to the magical atmosphere.
Saltwood Castle's gardens are only open twice a year, so visiting this plant sale is a must. The grounds are littered with moats, fortifications, and subterranean vaults. On the day, plant and craft stalls are nicely spaced throughout the formal and wild areas of the garden, and teas and homemade cakes are served.
